Sunday, a day of rest, but for many Slovaks also a day full of worries about the upcoming work week. What is behind the so-called “Sunday blues” – Sunday anxieties and how to maintain mental health, which is also destroyed by work stress?
Stress from work threatens us more and more often. Demands are growing and many cannot find time for regeneration. Statistics show that a significant part of the population suffers from anxiety associated with work stress. Overtime, high demands and constant pressure to perform lead to exhaustion and negatively affect our overall well-being. Other most common factors causing stress from work are: the work environment, work teams, but also the boss himself.
What goes on in our minds during the weekend?
- We suffer from anxiety about unfulfilled tasks. If we haven’t gotten everything done during the week, we may feel like our work is piling up and we’ll never get through it.
- We are afraid of new beginnings and challenges. A new week brings new tasks and projects, and worrying about whether we’ll be able to handle all the demands can cause anxiety.
- We often compare ourselves. Social media constantly shows us smiling and successful people and increases our level of dissatisfaction with ourselves.
- We can’t rest properly. Even when we have free time, we think about work tasks and worry about our lack of efficiency.
How to improve your mental health and prevent work anxiety?
- Set healthy boundaries: Separate your work and personal lives. Set aside time for relaxation. Be open about setting boundaries with your colleagues and boss.
- Plan your tasks – “to do list”: At the beginning of each week, create a list of tasks and priorities. This will help you gain a sense of control over the situation.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle: A balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are key to good mental health.
- Learn to relax: Choose activities that truly relax you.
- Seek support: Talk about your feelings with loved ones or a professional.
- Nobody is perfect: Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn to forgive yourself. If something doesn’t work out, learn to forgive yourself and move on.
- Focus on what you have: Think about everything you are grateful for. A positive attitude will help improve your mood.
Remember that your mental health is important. If your work anxiety is becoming unbearable, don’t hesitate to share your feelings with a professional and address the triggers.
